Hotel Review: DoubleTree by Hilton – Sonoma Wine Country

When we were planning our recent trip to Sonoma, our friend Pat suggested we stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sonoma – Wine Country hotel in Rohnert Park. He had stayed there several times in the past and assured us that it was a very nice hotel with the perfect central location for our wine tasting adventures. He was spot on!

I was able to book our 5 night stay using my Hilton points and took advantage of their Stay 4 Nights Get the 5th Night Free bonus. What a great deal.

Note: Although this hotel does not charge a Resort Fee it does charge a $15 per day Parking Fee.

We arrived a week before California began rolling back their Covid restrictions. The place was squeaky clean and following all the proper guidelines. As you can see, there was plenty of signage, plexiglass panels at the front desk and hand sanitizer stations located throughout the lobby.

The hotel was gorgeous. Some of the rooms came with covered terraces or patios. I was offered one of these ground level terrace rooms while booking, but chose not to take it. Since we hadn’t been there before, I was afraid they would either be really close to the parking lot or lack privacy. But as you can see, they are not at all close to parking and are well thought out with plenty of plants and trees adding a tasteful layer of privacy.

The hotel is located in a lovely area that is within walking distance to a golf course, shops, restaurants and even a convenience store. We walked to dinner a few evenings and I loved all the different flowers we saw along the way. When we were ready for adventures, we were also just a few minutes away from Highway 101.

Our room was spacious with a comfy King bed and plenty of pillows. There were nightstands located on each side of the bed with well placed plugs for our phones to charge at night. The closet contained even more pillows, a luggage jack, a safe and an iron. We appreciated the iron since a few of my husbands shirts got a bit wrinkled because he had overpacked. The room was also equipped with a 4 drawer dresser, large screen tv, a desk, a coffee maker and a mini fridge. The fridge was essential for storing a few snacks and keeping plenty of waters cold and ready for all of our warm weather wine adventures. The sofa was a great place to lounge and read or catch up on social media.

We were quite comfortable in this room for our 5 night stay. Due to Covid, daily housekeeping was not being offered. I usually opt not to have housekeeping during a multiday hotel stay anyway, so I didn’t really miss that option. When I did need some extra towels toward the end of our stay, they were happy to provide them to me at the front desk.

The bathroom was not at all fancy, but it was super clean and everything was in good working order. It was all we needed. There was plenty of space to get ready with a large vanity big enough for my husband and I to spread out all our stuff, and the mirror covered an entire wall.

As Hilton Gold Tier members, our stay was supposed to include breakfast. Our first morning was a Sunday, so we were able to get breakfast in the hotel dining area. Having stayed at this hotel before, Pat noted that the breakfast buffet was significantly minimal compared to their normal offering. Covid restrictions. The rest of the week we could only get breakfast items from the hotel bar. We tried the freshly microwaved breakfast sandwich and burrito to be rather lacking. They also offered a few pastries, yogurt and cereal. After the first day of that, I stuck to coffee or we went elsewhere for breakfast.

Note: Breakfast has since been temporarily changed to a hotel dining credit. See details at the end of the post.

We did get a chance to enjoy a few of the other hotel amenities during our stay. One balmy evening we went for a swim in the pool around sunset. It was located in a very nice garden area (sorry no pix), and not at all crowded so we found it to be quite relaxing. Another evening, we grabbed drinks at the bar and sipped them by the fireplace at the lounge. Since the hotel restaurant was closed, we ordered dinner from the bar on our last night and had it alfresco on our friends balcony while enjoying some of our wine treasures. All things considered, the meal was pretty good.

I thought this hotel was the perfect choice for this vacation. It was elegant, spacious and had lovely common areas. During our encounters with the staff, they were very helpful and always accomodating. The rooms were comfortable and well equipped for our 5 night stay. Everything in the hotel was clean and well maintained. I also liked that the room and common area decor didn’t seem tired or dated. We enjoyed the hotel amenities and absolutely loved the location. Anything that we didn’t like from our stay was due to the temporary Covid restrictions.

This hotel was a huge win with me and I would definitely stay here again and again. Look out Sonoma, I will be back!
