Survey Sites & Rebate Apps – Review

Honest Reviews:

At the end of 2016 I stepped away from my part time job. I had taken on a new role at my primary job and knew it was going to require a lot of focus to get up to speed. There were a lot of things I knew I would miss at that part time job. Since I had been there 7 years, it was like family to me. The money from this job originally funded college expenses for my kids. But as they finished school, it was then used for a lot of adventures, date nights and things I considered luxuries. That would be missed too.

I decided in January 2017 to explore ways to replace that Fun Money. I started reading blogs like the Penny Hoarder and Nerd Wallet finding ideas. I sorted through the suggestions, read reviews and started to try some out.  Later I discovered the Money Saving Mom blog and she has some great ideas as well.

Here is what I found:

My Rating Scale is 0 to 5 with 5 being the best and 0 being the worst

I was not paid or rewarded in any way to test and review these sites.  These are my honest opinions from my own personal experiences.

Ibotta / 4.5

Rebate app I use mostly for groceries but you can use for online shopping too.

  1. Easy to use
  2. Easy to Earn
  3. Can get actual Cash deposited to you quickly and easily
  4. Requires minimal effort to load offers 1x per week and upload receipt after shopping!
  5. I even get rewarded for beverages purchased at visits to local restaurants

Overall this is a Great App A Keeper with no real negatives. I have earned nearly $700 since starting.

Check Out 51 / 3

This is another grocery rebate app.

  1. Easy to use
  2. Harder to earn than Ibotta because the product offer selection is not as good
  3. To cash out you request a paper check that comes via the mail in 2-3 weeks.
  4. Requires minimal effort to load offers 1x per week and upload receipt after shopping!

This app is the tortoise and Ibotta is the hare. Slow and steady. It is a keeper that works well, just nothing fast. I have only earned $150 since starting this program.

Ebates / 4.5

Online shopping rebate app. We all shop online so just have to remember to start from their app.

  1. Easy to use
  2. Earnings depend on your online shopping and add up steadily
  3. No cash out request required they send quarterly checks
  4. Not a fast payout
  5. Store rewards % change daily so if you aren’t in a hurry to order you may be able to get a higher return
  6. They offer a lot of incentive bonus offers

This app works great and is a keeper. Ranks in the middle of the first 2 having paid me out $210 since starting.

Swagbucks / 1

Online survey site where you earn points for activities and completed surveys.

  1. Time Consuming
  2. Pretty low rate of surveys make it to completion for points
  3. You cash out for gift cards not cash.
  4. Have to log in and complete activities almost daily
  5. Security issues

After doing this for about 6 months, I noticed a definite increase in spam e-mails, phishing instances, and scam attempts. Eek! Although I was getting a $25 restaurant gift card every few weeks, it wasn’t worth the risk. Cancelled and deleted my account and the scary things stopped. I do not recommend this site!

Receipt Hog / 2

Simply a Receipt App.

  1. Easy to use
  2. Can scan in any receipt for points
  3. Points get cashed out to Amazon gift cards or to PayPal
  4. Points add up super slow

I am on the fence with this one. May be too little return for the investment. It also took me 6 months to get accepted into the program! I am going to continue through November then cash out in Amazon cards for Christmas. Probably will cut it loose after that.

Pinch Me / 0

Online Surveys to win Sample boxes

  1. Time Consuming
  2. Pretty low rate of surveys make it to completion for points
  3. Earn 400 points from completed surveys to guarantee you will get any samples.
  4. The whole process and program layout is very glitchy
  5. Inundated with e-mail from their site and spam e-mails

This site did not perform well at all for me.  I got so many confusing and misleading e-mails from them every day. Additionally, I started getting a lot of spam e-mails as soon as I started with this program.   I did not receive the products I expected or in the timeframe that they illustrated on their site.  When I contacted Customer Service, I got an automated reply several hours later that did not handle the issue.  I do not reccommend this site.

My overall feeling is that the Survey sites don’t just ask your opinions they want a lot of personal information that I don’t want to share.  By using those programs your information seems to get in the hands of spammers and scammers.  Plus it takes a lot of time/effort to complete enough surveys to get any benefits. The small amount of reward is not worth the time or the risk involved.

Ebates and Ibotta are the best of the Rebate Apps that I have used so far.  They offer a good selection of rebates, a quick and easy process and simple payouts.  Check Out 51 is still worth your time even though there are not as many appealing offers and the rebates are not as robust making it takes longer to earn any real money.  Althought Receipt Hog has a quick and easy process, it takes a long time to earn enough points for rewards and doesn’t really provide much benefit for your efforts.

I hope this has been helpful and that you will try out one or two of these programs.  There are links available for most of these sites on my  Referrals & Recomendations  page.  Please feel free to share your experiences, opinions, or other programs we should try in the comment section below.
